Patrick Jerome, Muscular Dystrophy Chair for the Medicine Hat Fire Department, accepts an Award of Appreciation presented to Medicine Hat Fire Fighters Assciation Local 263. Due to the generousity of Hatters our local firefighters have raised $10 051.55 during the 2010-11 year. The money raised by Medicine Hat Fire Fighters will be used to improve the quality of life for people living with neuromuscular disorders by purchasing mobility equipment, providing support services, and funding research which will one day lead to a cure. Thank you to all who have donated and volunteered during last year's campaign to fight against neuromuscular disorders.
Due to thin ice, Hat residents are urged to stay off any ice on or near the South Saskatchewan River or any of its tributaries.
The city said in a news release Sunday that Fire Services is responding to reports of people and pets walking on river ice.
"This is an extremely dangerous situation," said Deputy Fire Chief Brian Stauth. "River ice is never considered safe, therefore citizens and pets should stay off the river."
In addition, citizens should use caution around any water that appears to be frozen. Recent cooler temperatures in Medicine Hat may be giving a false sense of security, but several bodies of water are spring-fed, which affects thickness and stability. Officials say many ponds look stable but are not firm enough to support a person.
"The ice thickness on moving bodies of water is dubious at best, even in cold weather, so please understand the message that no ice is safe ice," said aquatic team leader Ryan Pinter.
Residents are also reminded to not allow pets near the river or ponds.

This small video will show how fast a small room becomes fully engulfed in flames. This video was filmed using a hemet cam on a firefighters helmet. This room was constructed with regular drywall and furnished with regular household furnishings. There was no use of any materials to promote flame growth for this controlled burn. You can hear the how long it takes for the smoke detector to activate as well you can see how fast the fire grows. The video has been edited a little bit so the time markers in the video are taken from the time the heat source was initiated.
