Canadian Badlands Regional Firefighter Combat Challenge
Updated On: Jun 22, 2010 (18:25:00)

Medicine Hat Fire Department, Cypress County and Department of National Defense Suffield Firefighter Union have teamed up to bring Fire Fit Canada to the city on June 12th & 13th, 2010. Competitors from all over will be competing in the Fire Fighter Combat Challenge which showcases the demands of Fire Fighting. This fitness challenge puts firefighters against each other in a job related timed obstacle course.  It has been called "The Toughest Two Minutes In Sport"

It is a fire fighting competition and you are to be dressed as you would be at the scene of a fire. All turnout gear, including boots, helmet, gloves, pants, jacket, and breathing apparatus must be suitable for structural firefighting. Modification of gear null and voids the  gear from use on the course.

The popularity of the FireFit Competition has grown and grown over the years and visits every Province in Canada.  With the popularity of the 1 hour Championship Finals show, aired on TSN, OLN & RDS, FireFit has become known not only in Canada but World Wide. Competitors can come from every Province and Territory in Canada. The required tasks:

Competitors will be donned with Scott SCBA and ushered onto the course. The first event is the stair climb with High Rise Pack. The High Rise Pack is a 4 foot bundle of 4 inch hose weighing 42 pounds once at the top this hose is placed in a basket. After this a 45 lb Donut Roll of Angus LDH hose and 5/8" kern-mantle rope are hoisted to the top of the tower and also placed in the basket. Then the competitor may return down the tower touching every stair on the way down. Next is the force machine where the individual must move a steel beam a designated distance with an 8lb hammer. The next task is to run 140 feet to the charged hose line, this is then pulled 75 feet at which time the target must be hit with a water stream. Finally a 175lb dummy must be dragged 100 feet across the finish line.

Saturdays events included firefighters from across Western Canada as well as one from Idaho competing in individual event times. Results were:

Sundays times were a lot faster as they featured team relay events in an elimination round. 20 teams competed resulting in the following placements 1. Edmonton 2.Shell Scottford 3. DND #1 4.Syncrude 504 smoke

A new addition to the FireFit races has been the NXG2 relay. NxG2 Teams consist of 2 individuals from the same Department. The relay is very similar to the other events except they trade air tanks during the race and don’t carry a hose pack up the tower.

Competitor #1 will don the Scott NxG2 Air Pack to begin the race. Shoulder straps and hip straps must be secured before running the stairs.  The pack is set in a standard way for all Competitors.  All straps undone and cylinder upright and facing out.  All 4 straps need to be pulled and tightened after donning. No touching the Pak prior to the start is allowed. Once the firefighter comes down from the tower they move to the Bottle Exchange Area, where Competitor #2 is waiting to exchange your air cylinder. Competitor #2 is already donned with Air Pak harness (no bottle). Competitor #2 removes Competitor #1's NxG2 Air Cylinder and passes it to Competitor #1, who then inserts the NxG2 Air Cylinder into Competitor #2 harness, ensuring that the cylinder clip is secure and bottle is turned on. Competitor #2 is now able to begin their portion of the course.

Thank you to Steven Seymour (MHFD) and Jason Elder (DND Suffield) for making this possible. A lot of hours went in to the planning and preparation for this event to be showcased in Medicine Hat.  Thank you to Rich, Dale & Hilary from FireFit for the opportunity to host this event in Medicine Hat.
Also thank to all of those who traveled many miles to make this event a success, the many volunteers, as well as the hundreds of people that came out to enjoy the sunshine and watch firefighters compete against each other. Hopefully this event will again visit the great City of Medicine Hat in the future.
